No one person can actually put a price on a cherished recipe from your Grandmother.
All that one can do with such an unforgettable dish is to share the love that’s in it.
With love and care from my Bubby, to you and yours. Enjoy
Tzimmes ( short rib and carrots )
2 lbs short ribs or 4 thick slices
1/2 cup water
2 lb carrots, peeled & sliced
2 sweet potatoes, sliced in 4,
2 whole onions
1 cup honey or brown sugar (more if desired) I use ½ cup br. sugar, 1/2 cup honey.
3/4 lb prunes (about a cup) make sure no pits
Juice of 1/2 lemon
salt and pepper to taste (lots of fresh black pepper)
Sprinkle short ribs with salt and pepper, in a fry pan with 2 tablespoons hot oil, sear on all side, remove and place in roasting pan with all other ingredients.
Cover and cook for 2 hours at 350. Uncover, stir and let brown about 1 hour more.
If the sauce hasn’t thickened enough add 2 tablespoons of flour to ¼ cup of cold water, stir until smooth, add to tzimmes, mix well and bake for a few minutes more.
Enjoy!
I make this every Rosh Hashanah for a sweet New Year
Can we substitute something else for the sweet potatoes? (my husband doesn’t like them!)
Saw your comment. Regular Hardy Potatoes are fine! I know you wrote this 2 years ago….LOL…but I figure I would respond. L’Shana Tova
Hi Shari, white potatoes would work well, if hubby doesnt like white just forget about the potatoes all together and you might have a new better recipe 🙂
if you do make it, please let me know how everyone loved it.
I am up at 3:20AM getting all my dishes done! LOL I also add Apricots on occasion to mine. I slow cook mine in the Crock-pot to kick start it…and then transfer it to the Broiler Pan when it is almost tender. Then I add the Sweet Potatoes, Prunes, and More Seasoning…and let it slow cook in the Oven on 250 for 6-8 hours….checking it. The last hour I remove the cover and let it brown on top. It gets really Gooey and Yummy. I also use Brown Sugar and Honey. Never tried lemon juice…but I might this year! Happy New Year! This was my Grandma’s recipe too!
Karen, thank you for replying, Yours sounds fabulous! I would love to try your recipe, maybe next year. I just took the tzimmis out of the freezer, made it last week.
Happy Healthy New Year.
I love tzimmes and am making it right now
Enjoy Chiah and a very Happy healthy Passover to you and yours.
